Why Do We Call Ourselves the Banyan?

The word Banyan comes from a Banyan Tree. Banyan trees have a large center trunk. Long branches reach out and then drop a vine to create another tree. Our vision is that Jesus Christ is the center trunk; the new trees are the families and children in community. A grove of trees, or large community, is created around the center trunk.
The energy of the Banyan begins at the roots, where the community lives. The Banyan gets to know neighbors and listens to their dreams for the children and the community. Then the energy is upward helping youth grow and be nurtured, by supporting and empowering families. Once this happens, the energy moves outward, and more families are brought into the circle. The cycle starts again, gaining momentum as the asset base grows in the community. That is what it means to be a part of the Banyan Community… rooted, rising and reaching.
